How do I Know if my Dog Carries the Mutation for Natural Bobtail?

DDC Veterinary offers DNA testing for Natural Bobtail among several dog breeds. By identifying the genotypes of phenotypically short-tailed dogs, our clients can accurately determine whether the animal is a Natural Bobtail (genetically short-tailed) or has been artificially docked.

Breeders can use DNA testing as a tool to more effectively manage mating patterns and make more informed selection decisions.

DNA results are emailed within 5 business days, once all samples are received at the laboratory.

Understanding Results

Natural Bobtail (DNA marker tested – T gene mutation C189G): Natural Bobtail is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Dogs that have 2 normal copies of gene will have a long tail (or, if they have a short tail, then they have been artificially docked). Those dogs that have 1 normal copy and 1 copy of the C189G mutation (heterozygotes) are a genetically short-tailed animal (Natural Bobtail). Receiving 2 copies of the C189G mutation is considered to be lethal.
