All horse DNA tests require you to collect and send us hair samples
DIY Tips
Each sample submitted must be horse hair and also must include this set of forms: Sample Submission Form and (download these forms and see DNA-collection instructions below). Do not cut the hair: It is collected through pulling. This is so that the root bulb (follicle) is included with the rest of the hair—it’s the root bulb that contains the DNA!
IMPORTANT: We do not accept samples other than hair. Follow all DIY instructions below carefully, and if you have questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].

Download Materials
Download and then fill out the sample submission form and the DNA submission form: one set for each horse. Then download the detailed DNA-collection instructions and read them through before getting started.
Gather What You Need
Gather cellophane (Scotch) tape, plain paper envelopes for each DNA sample, and a paper mailing envelope that you’ll use to send all DNA samples to DDC. Do not use plastic containers or plastic bags to store DNA samples.
Label Envelope
Before collecting DNA, label each of the individual envelopes with the same info on the sample-collection sheet: submitter’s name, date of collection, horse’s name, gender, breed, and color/markings.
Collect DNA
Pull 12-25 hairs by wrapping the hair around your finger close to the skin and pulling quickly and evenly. Use hair from the mane for adult animals and hair from the tail for foals. Tape to sample-collection sheet as shown in full instructions and place in pre-labeled envelopes.
Package Materials
Place paper sample envelope(s), sample-submission form (s), and payment (if you’ve not already paid online or by phone) into a paper mailing envelope and address it to DDC.
Mail Samples & Forms
For fastest results, we recommend using a courier service. Once your samples arrive at our lab, we’ll email you results within 10 days.
